Hershey Medical Center revises COVID-19 surge plan as inpatient volumes increase

Hershey Medical Center leaders have revised the COVID-19 Patient Placement and Surge Plan- HMC in response to the rapidly escalating number of COVID-19 inpatient cases.
Key changes include new care locations and new surge phases as well as the corresponding patient numbers.
The new surge phase sand patient numbers are as follows:
- Adult Green ― 0-20 patients; Pediatrics Green ― 0-3 patients
- Adult Yellow ― 21-32 patients; Pediatrics Yellow ― 4-6 patients
- Adult Orange ― 33-43 patients; Pediatrics Orange ― 7-9 patients
- Adult Red ― 44-54 patients; Pediatrics Red ― 10-15 patients
- Adult Maroon ― 55-75 patients; Pediatrics Maroon ― >15
- Adult Purple ― 76-86 patients
- Adult Navy ― >86
Leadership has added these care locations, which will open based upon surge phase.
Acute Care
- 3 Main Building West (8 beds) ― Will open in Yellow Phase
- 3 Main Building East (13 beds) ― Will open in Purple Phase
Intermediate Care Unit
- Medical Intermediate Care Unit ― (20 beds) – Will open in Maroon Phase
Two locations have been removed from the Surge Plan, Station 1 of the Surgical Acute Intensive Care Unit and same-day postoperative care.
Leaders also have identified additional negative pressure rooms for urgent patient placement if needed.
Employees are encouraged to read Daily Brief and check in with managers to learn about ongoing surge and COVID-19 policy changes.
