Hershey Medical Center revises crescent lighting guidelines

Hershey Medical Center revised its guidelines for how it will decide which colors to use to light its crescent-shaped façade.

The decisions will be made to align with strategic marketing priorities.

Among the changes:

  • No more than four lighting events will be permitted per month.
  • Requests will be considered in order they were submitted.
  • Lighting requests should align with recognized observances (such as establish disease awareness months/weeks) and strategic marketing priorities.
  • Requests must be submitted at least 60 days prior to lighting dates.
  • All lighting events must include content that can be shared on social media. Ensure your web content is up to date prior to submitting a request.
  • Penn State Health Marketing and Communications will vet all requests and Hershey Medical Center president will make the final decisions using the parameters described above.

The lighting of the crescent is a unique platform for engagement with the Hershey community. For many years, the health system has honored special events and raised awareness by lighting the crescent for certain observances and disease recognitions to increase awareness and show Penn State Health’s dedication to the health of its community.

During the spring, a team from the Office of Marketing and Communication team worked with hospital and health system leaders to develop and secure approval for fiscal year 2021–22 strategic marketing priorities. The establishment of these priorities guide decisions about marketing and communications planning, focus and investments throughout the fiscal year, including the crescent lighting.
