Hillemeier: ‘It has been an honor and privilege’

Dr. Craig Hillemeier, who will retire next week as dean of Penn State College of Medicine, Penn State’s senior vice president for health affairs and chief executive officer of Penn State Health, sent a farewell message to his colleagues and staff members today:

Dear Colleagues,

As my time with our organization comes to a close, I want to take a moment and share my heartfelt gratitude for all that you have meant to me these past 18 years.

From the moment my wife and I arrived in Hershey in 2001, we felt welcomed and appreciated. Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health became our home, and you became our family. It has been an honor and privilege to lead and learn from so many talented and passionate people as we worked together to enhance health.

The world is a better place because of the healing, discovery and teaching taking place each day inside our hospitals and clinics, our labs, our classrooms and our communities.

I know it’s been challenging as our organization has transitioned from a Hershey-centric academic medical center to a university health system that is now spread across central and southeastern Pennsylvania. Change can be unsettling. But, I am confident that our strategy to take care into the communities where our patients live is the right one. I’m also confident that we’ve partnered with the right people and practices to do that. With the new leadership in place, and the unwavering dedication of the people of this organization, Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine are well-poised for the future.

My wife and I very much look forward to being able to spend more time with family, especially my grandchildren. But truth be told, retirement is bittersweet. I’m grateful to have so many wonderful memories and cherished friendships that Marianne and I take with us into this new chapter of our lives.

Thank you. I wish you well.

Craig Hillemeier, MD
Dean, CEO and Senior Vice President for Health Affairs
