First Friday presentation to show how improv techniques can improve communication

The Department of Humanities at Penn State College of Medicine will host a First Friday presentation, “Improv for Enhanced Communication,” from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 2.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in Room C2860, on the second floor of the Biomedical Research Building, on the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Campus, 500 University Dr., Hershey, PA 17033.

Improv professionals will introduce applied theater, improvisation and drama therapy. Improv helps to develop communication skills, teamwork and flexibility in many circumstances. Increasingly, members of the medical profession are finding it a useful tool when dealing with the challenges associated with healthcare.

Local presenters include Patrick Hughes and Jennie Adams. Hughes, a licensed professional counselor and registered improv drama therapist, has worked in hospitals and community health centers. He currently has a private practice in Lemoyne. Adams, director of Education at the Harrisburg Improv Theatre, performs and has taught for 12 years in theaters, colleges and workplaces.
