I am Penn State Health: Julius Cabbagestalk

When Julius Cabbagestalk graduated from Buffalo State College, he planned on a career as a computer programmer—until he realized he liked interacting with people more than computers. These days, he is the Service Desk team lead for Information Services at Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine, a job he’s held since 2016 when he was promoted from field technician in Information Services Workplace Services.

He spends his days empowering both his Information Services staff and all employees to use their computers as a tool that makes their jobs easier. And, happily, if he’s at someone’s desk investigating a problem, he is sure to take a few moments to hear about their family or their latest vacation.

Information Services Crucial to Patient Care

Computers are an integral part of care. If a computer in a patient’s room isn’t working properly, when the nurse checks blood sugar levels, she can’t immediately transfer that data to the patient’s chart, and that affects patient care.

This is Our Promise to You

You can’t break something that’s broken. People who call the Information Services Desk—which is everyone who works here at some point or another—are usually not very happy, and they’re frustrated. I can relate! I know how to fix a computer, but if you ask me to rip apart the engine of my car, I’ll be intimidated. My promise is this: every exchange you have with us will be a positive one, and it will end in satisfaction, not more frustration.

Top Three Issues I Resolve

  1. Password resets
  2. Network connectivity
  3. Medical documentation mechanics

This is Why I Love Working Here

I love empowering people and building their confidence. When you teach them something new, they’re like, “Wow! The next time this happens, I can do this myself.” It builds their confidence.

This is What Makes Me Proud

I’ll hear new health system employees say that, at their past worksites, it could take a week or more for the “help desk” to resolve their computer problem. Here, they marvel at being helped within an hour. That says to me that we deliver great service.

Best Part of My Job

When I can help the people who work with me become better folks – that’s the best. By making the next person on my team better, I’m helping make the entire Penn State Health system better.
