Improving patients’ first and last impression

Penn State Health employees and Penn State College of Medicine staff and students have the opportunity to improve the patient experience simply by following the Hershey campus parking policy. Employees and students who do not display a permit sticker on their vehicles will need to comply with the established parking permit policy.

“The Hershey campus currently has enough parking for our patients, visitors and employees,” said Scott Sutherland, director of security for Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. “We have more than 9,000 spaces. If all employees and students park in their designated parking lots, that will allow our patients and visitors to park close to the clinical areas and help improve the patient experience tremendously.”

Parking Permit Policy

Vehicles parked on campus must have a valid Milton S. Hershey Medical Center parking registration sticker displayed on the bottom-right section of the rear window, no more than 3 inches from the bottom. If the sticker will not fit below the defrosting system, place it in the lower corner of the rear passenger side window.

Enforcement Scheduled to Increase

Starting Wednesday, May 22, Parking Services will begin doing sweeps of all employee parking areas and putting warning flyers on cars that do not have a parking permit. Warning notices will be issued until June 23.

On June 24, Parking Services will increase enforcement and begin issuing citations to the owners of vehicles that do not display permits. These citations will include a $30 fine per incident. Every two weeks, managers will receive a list of their direct reports who have been cited. Once per quarter, senior leaders will receive a list of the managers under them whose employees are in violation of the parking policy.

“Penn State Health is taking these actions to reinforce our commitment to putting patients first,” Sutherland said. “We need to provide our patients with safe, accessible parking close to our clinics so that they can make their appointments on time and stress-free. Working together, we can use this enforcement initiative to help improve the patient experience.”
