Stop the bleed kits

Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) and the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital Pediatric Trauma and Injury Prevention Program are teaming up on a fundraiser to provide Stop the Bleed kits to schools throughout central Pennsylvania. The goal is to train school staff members in basic bleeding control techniques. Visit the CMN website to donate through Sept. 30.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Four Diamonds invites Penn State Health and College of Medicine employees to join in the fight to conquer childhood cancer:

  • Register for the THON 5K on Sunday, Oct. 21 at THON.org
  • Share a story of courage, wisdom, honesty and strength on Facebook or Twitter using #GoGoldFTK

Approved Paid Time Off

Public Health Sciences seminar series

Duanping Liao, professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, will present “Bias, confounding, moderation and mediation” at the next Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design Recent Topics in Research Methods seminar series:

Eight-week yoga class

The University Fitness Center will offer an eight-week yoga class:

  • Easing Stress with Yoga
  • Tuesdays 5:30–6:45 p.m., Sept. 11–Oct. 30

Certified yoga therapist Dan Coma will teach breathing techniques, yoga exercises, deep relaxation and meditation. Anyone who attends six out of the eight classes will have the usual $140 fee waived. Register online.

Lunch and Learn seminar

Dr. Timothy Brundage of the Brundage Group will discuss “Documenting for Quality of Care Metrics and PSI Awareness to Support Severity of Illness and Risk of Mortality”:

Heart Walk

Dr. Thomas Chin, chief of pediatric cardiology and medical director of the Children’s Heart Group at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, is leading a team in the American Heart Association’s (AHA) 2018 Capital Region Heart Walk:

  • Sunday, Sept. 16
  • Registration: 12:30 p.m.
  • Walk: 2 p.m.
  • City Island, Harrisburg

Participants can chose to walk one mile, three miles or both. Register or donate on the Heart Walk website.

Ice Cream social

Penn State Health Children’s Hospital invites all employees to an ice cream social celebrating its latest U.S. News & World Report rankings as one of the top children’s hospitals in the nation:

The Children’s Hospital ranked in cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, and nephrology in the 2018-2019 rankings.

Lunchtime Lecture

RSVP by Thursday, Sept. 13 for a Lunchtime Lecture co-hosted by Research Quality Assurance and the Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute:

Kathleen Hill, director of the Center for Science and the Schools; Amanda Smith, STEM outreach and engagement liaison and Amber Cesare, STEM education outreach specialist, will present. Food will be provided to those who RSVP by the deadline.

Operations

Several stairwells in Hershey Medical Center will be closed for maintenance on the following dates:

  • Sept. 4-14: Stairwell 13 will be closed for painting from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. on weeknights only. The painting will begin at the top of Stairwell 13, and one floor per night will be completed. The stairwell lighting will also be upgraded.
  • Sept. 7-9: Stairwell 21 and the H1199J connecting corridor will be closed for flooring replacement at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7 until 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9. There will be no access to the first floor of Stairwell 13.
  • Sept. 14-16: Stairwell 21 and the H1199J connecting corridor will be closed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14 until 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16 for wallpaper removal and painting. There will be no access to the first floor of Stairwell 13.

Elevator 41 in the University Physician Center will be taken out of service on Monday, Sept. 10 for approximately 12 weeks so that the elevator machine can be replaced and the control system can be upgraded. Contact Matt Grimes at 717-531-0003, x284068, for details.
