About Juneteenth:

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, slavery continued in places under Confederate control. In Texas, freedom came two years later when Union troops arrived in the city of Galveston to announce that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free by executive decree. Juneteenth celebrates this date: June 19, 1865. Often considered America’s second Independence Day, Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.
