Dr. Fadia Kamal receives grant to support osteoarthritis treatment research
Fadia Kamal, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State College of Medicine, was recently awarded an Arthritis National Research Foundation grant for her work toward treating osteoarthritis.
Kamal’s lab works to discover a treatment for osteoarthritis that can delay or even reverse cartilage degeneration and provide a better quality of life for osteoarthritis patients. Kamal is studying the role of proteins that activate key inflammatory signaling pathways in the body. Her research involves a particular type of cell surface receptors—G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). These act like an inbox for messages that spark continuous and progressive cartilage degradation. Kamal’s work studies ways to inhibit this process.
