MD/PhD student earns National Institute of Mental Health research award

Penn State College of Medicine MD/PhD student Sarah Jefferson is the recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health F30 award for her study of depression.

Jefferson’s project, “The role of somatostatin-expressing GABAergic interneurons in depressive behavior,” uses mouse models to examine how specific classes of inhibitory neurons alter anxiety and depression-related behaviors. Her goal is to identify new targets for more effective and faster-acting antidepressant drugs.

Jefferson expects to graduate in 2020 and earned her bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Penn State University Park in 2010. She is a graduate student in the laboratory of Bernhard Luscher, PhD, in the Eberly College of Science.
