Medical Scientist Training Program holds annual fall retreat

The Medical Scientist Training Program at Penn State College of Medicine welcomed the first-year cohort, met with program alumni and enjoyed peer networking opportunities during a retreat Sept. 6.

The MD/PhD retreat committee members Justyn DuSold, Victoria Nudell, Yoshitaka Shibata, Andrew Sugarman and Cameron Zielinski planned and executed the event, which featured Saumya Maru, MD, PhD, a 2019 graduate of the program.

The MD/PhD program’s co-directors, Leslie Parent, MD, and Kirsteen Browning, PhD, provided a welcome and update.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Maru, talked to the group about her career journey. Dr. Maru is a chief medical oncology postdoctoral research fellow at Johns Hopkins University.

Attendees participated in a poster session, where they were encouraged to get to know more about each other’s research.

The MD/PhD program is supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health and trains medical scientists interested in pursuing careers in biomedical research and academic medicine.
