Medical Scientist Training Program hosts fall retreat focused on physician-scientist careers

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at Penn State College of Medicine held its annual fall retreat on Sept. 18, bringing students together for an evening focused on the career paths of physician-scientists.
The retreat began with a networking dinner on the Biomedical Research Building patio, offering students the opportunity to connect with peers and program leadership.
Following dinner, attendees heard personal career reflections from two guest speakers: Leslie Parent, MD, vice dean for research and graduate studies, and Amanda Nelson, PhD, associate professor of dermatology.
Both speakers shared insights into their own professional journeys, highlighting the opportunities and challenges of balancing clinical care with research. Their perspectives provided valuable context for trainees preparing for careers at the intersection of medicine and scientific discovery.
The annual fall retreat is a key program touchpoint for MSTP students, fostering community, mentorship and professional development as they pursue dual training in medicine and biomedical research.
