Mickalonis named Penn State Health system emergency management and business continuity director
Scott Mickalonis has joined Penn State Health in the newly created role of emergency management and business continuity director. His responsibilities include oversight, strategic direction and leadership of the emergency management program, as well as business resilience and continuity for the health system.
Mickalonis brings a wealth of experience to this position, having most recently served as vice president of emergency management for The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), where he provided support and subject matter expertise to the organization’s board of directors, advocacy teams and 240 member organizations. He also integrated the emergency management program into HAP’s overall strategies, including advocacy, research and quality initiatives.
Prior to assuming the vice president role, Mickalonis served as the regional manager for preparedness during HAP’s contract with the statewide hospital preparedness program, managing the South Central and South Central Mountain Health Care Coalitions. Through these relationships he gained valuable experience in several key areas: providing on-site expertise in safety, environment of care and emergency management accreditation standards, and disaster response for a large Houston health system during Hurricane Harvey.
Mickalonis served as Penn State Health’s manager for emergency preparedness from 2014 until 2017, prior to leaving for HAP. He also spent 15 years as deputy director for emergency management with the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety and served in various first responder roles, including firefighter, paramedic, fire and EMS officer and hazardous materials technician.
An advisory board member of the Burn Prevention Network, Mickalonis holds the Certified Emergency Manager credential and is a Level III Certified Hospital Emergency Coordinator. He earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Penn State and completed a master’s degree in emergency management at Millersville University, Lancaster.
