Morahan to retire this spring

Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center President John Morahan sent the following email on Thursday to all St. Joseph employees and Penn State Health and College of Medicine leaders and managers:

I am writing to share that after 20 years as the executive leader of this wonderful organization, I’ve decided to retire effective this coming spring. I’ll share more details in the days and weeks ahead as Penn State Health leadership and the Penn State Health St. Joseph board initiate a search for my successor.

In the meantime, I look forward to continuing our shared work at St. Joseph Medical Center, the Downtown Reading campus and across the region on behalf of the communities we serve in Berks, Schuylkill and beyond. But first, a brief moment of reflection.

Penn State Health St. Joseph is a very special place built on the foundation of the mission established in 1873 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia through our membership in Catholic Health Initiatives and, today, with Penn State Health.

The achievements we’ve made together are many, and among those of which I’m most proud are:

  • Investment in and development of the Bern Township campus and our 204-bed hospital that opened in 2006
  • Working with community and business leaders to transition the former hospital campus at 12th and Walnut Streets to the Reading School District, who repurposed it into an award-winning junior high school
  • Development of an extensive network of 16 ambulatory/outpatient facilities covering the Berks community and offering diagnostic, rehab, urgent care and physician services
  • Growing partnerships with employed physicians through the creation of the St. Joseph Medical Group while, through regular engagement, balancing the needs and interests of the private physicians that make up a significant percentage of our medical staff
  • Of course, the transition of St. Joseph from Catholic Health Initiatives to be the first hospital member in Penn State Health
  • And, the recent capital investment by Penn State Health to grow our accredited cardiology, cancer and robotic surgery programs.

Mostly, what stands out in all of these accomplishments, and the many more I have been privileged to share with you over 20 years, is your efforts to live our mission every day. As talented, dedicated, mission-focused physicians, nurses, clinical and support staff and volunteers, you give your very best each day to the people who need us most. I am proud to have worked with so many of you, and to have witnessed so many of you ‘in action’ delivering care in in the spirit of the Sisters of St. Francis. Thank you for all you do and for all you have done.As mentioned, more information will follow about the search for a new president. In the meantime, I look forward to continuing to work with all of you to advance the quality, cost-efficient care that has become the hallmark of Penn State Health St. Joseph.
