College of Medicine students attend National MD/PhD Student Conference
Four Penn State College of Medicine students participated in the National MD/PhD Student Conference, held July 13 to 15, 2018, in Keystone, Colorado.
Each year, the University of Colorado Medical Scientist Training Program sponsors and coordinates the conference. Organized by third-year Medical Scientist Training Program students, the event provides an opportunity for MD/PhD students around the country to present their work and interact with other students and prominent scientific investigators.
The event, held since 1986, is a gathering of more than 200 students, faculty and alumni from more than 60 academic institutions in the United States and Canada.
Penn State College of Medicine MD/PhD Medical Scientist Training Program students in their graduate years with strong research records and active program involvement are selected to attend the conference on the recommendation of the program’s co-directors, Dr. Leslie Parent and Dr. Robert Levenson.
Traditionally, the MD/PhD program sends two students to this national conference. The program was successful in securing supplemental funding from NIH for T32 pre-doctoral training programs, which will allow for increased support for student professional development, including travel to national conferences and meetings. With that funding, four students were able to attend this year’s event: Scott Tucker, Sarah Jefferson, Kristin Lambert and Jerry Ren.
