New security measures start Dec. 1 in Hershey Medical Center perianesthesia units

Several new security changes will go into effect in the perianesthesia units at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center beginning Saturday, Dec. 1. The goals of the changes are to ensure the safety of all patients and employees.
- Effective Dec. 1, the Same Day Preoperative Unit will be locked 24 hours a day/seven days a week. Employees will need a valid ID badge to gain access to the unit. They will be required to swipe the badge and press the door’s push pad.
- The south doors to the Same-Day Postoperative Unit and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit will also be locked 24/7. Currently, they are locked on weekends only. Employees will need a valid badge to gain entrance through the south doors. Individuals who do not have a badge can use the intercom to call the unit.
Milton S. Hershey Medical Center employees are required to wear their ID badge at all times. Staff members should not allow individuals without a badge to “tag along” as they gain entry.
“Situational awareness, or paying attention to your surroundings and whether anyone or anything poses a threat to health and safety, is the most important key to keeping Hershey Medical Center safe,” said Kimberly Crosson, perianesthesia nurse manager.
