Nurses Week celebrates caregivers

Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center joined hospitals around the country in paying tribute to the 29 million nurses around the world during Nurses Week, May 6 to 12.

At the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, hundreds came to play kickball on the front lawn, try yoga, join in carnival games and share food. The Nursing Reward and Recognition Committee planned the activities.

Nurses Week 2019

Among the highlights:

  • The Tree House Café transformed into the Carnival Café on May 6. More than 300 staff members, patients and families enjoyed games, a photo booth and snacks.
  • More than 22 nursing staff members were recognized for outstanding service at the annual Nursing Recognition Ceremony and Magnet Pinning on May 6.
  1. More than 200 attended the Be Kind to Yourself event on May 8, where they learned yoga techniques and gathered information from Mary Kay Cosmetics, LipSense lip color, and Be Balanced Weight Loss, employee safety and other topics. They also were able to write out “Joy Grams” for coworkers expressing their appreciation.
  • Twelve staff nurses were selected to attend the Teaching Kitchen, a new event for 2019, on May 8. Nurses were selected based on unit patient satisfaction scores and were able to join Morrison Foods, the hospital’s catering vendor, to demonstrate how to make the select recipe.
  • Chocolate chefs competed in the Chocolate Challenge to create the most decadent chocolate recipes. The winners were:
    • Renee Houser ― first place
    • Lara Sowers ― second place
    • Kelly Myers ― third place
  • Fourteen teams played in the annual kickball tournament. The Heart and Vascular Progressive Care Unit fielded the winning team.
