Nyeusi Gallery’s ‘Redefining Black Art’ exhibition featured at Holy Spirit Medical Center
Center Stage Arts in Health installed a multicultural display entitled “Redefining Black Art” near the cafeteria at Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center.
The installation came from a partnership with the Nyeusi Gallery in Harrisburg and will be on loan to the medical center for one year.
The project calms, welcomes and inspires the health care community, said Claire de Boer, director of Center Stage Arts in Health for Penn State Health. “The arts serve to uplift our patients and families, to build community among our health care providers and to nourish the well-being of all across our health system,” she said.
“Art reaches the mind and the soul in an intangible way. Viewers of this display can take time for self-reflection and appreciation of creativity,” said Dr. Dale Dangleben, trauma medical director at Holy Spirit Medical Center and part owner of the Nyeusi Gallery. Dangleben said he was pleased to help to curate the display to help highlight diversity and assist patients, visitors and staff with mental rejuvenation.
The Nyeusi Gallery features art from Africa, the Caribbean and Americas, thus the African Diaspora circle. The gallery collection consists of paintings, masks, statues and jewelry.
Don McKenna, former president of Hampden and Holy Spirit medical centers and interim president of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, said partnering with local galleries to host exhibits keeps the atmosphere in the medical centers fresh. The Susquehanna Art Museum also hosts a satellite art exhibit at the Hampden Medical Center.
“Locally curated displays help us reflect the rich, diverse culture of our patient and employee population in a powerful way,” McKenna said.
