Parking changes on Hershey Medical Center campus start today

Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is launching a series of parking changes today, Monday, April 15 to accommodate the rapid growth of the Hershey campus. The changes are designed to improve the parking experience for patients and their families, as well as Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine employees, faculty and staff.

“It’s no secret that our patients continue to tell us they find the parking on our campus a problem,” said Deborah Berini, Hershey Medical Center president. “When they have trouble finding a parking space, they are often late to their doctor’s appointments, which lowers patient satisfaction. These new procedures are designed to balance patient service with employees’ needs.

“We will need everyone to put our RITE value of teamwork in action to make these necessary changes and to ensure the best experience for our patients and our co-workers.”

The following changes begin on April 15:

Parking Assignments

  • The entire first floor (red level) and second floor (brown level) of the Centerview Parking Garage will be dedicated to patient parking, providing 140 additional spaces. Employees are permitted to park above the second level.
  • Overflow parking is available in Lot L, on the south and east side of the Academic Support Building (ASB). Employees who work in the ASB are designated to Lot L as their primary parking area.
  • Some employees who currently park in the Centerview Parking Garage have been reassigned to parking lots that are closer to their departments.
  • Employees who park in patient areas will be ticketed.

Shuttle Service Expansion

To accommodate the parking changes, Shuttle Services will increase the number of campus shuttle routes and the times of service.

  • The shuttle will run from 6:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., arriving approximately every six minutes, from Lot L near the Academic Support Building. See the shuttle route map.
  • An on-demand shuttle will run from 5:30 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. Employees can call 717-599-6376 for a ride to 17 different locations in Hershey. See the on-demand shuttle locations.

UPC Valet Service

Parking Services will also begin a valet service for patients and their families who park at the University Physician Center on a trial basis.

New Parking Deck

Construction is underway on a new five-story parking deck next to the University Conference Center, which will provide more than 1,200 additional spaces when completed this December.

“It’s important that we strive to improve the patient experience, including the essential first and last impression made by parking,” Berini said. “In doing so, we are working toward solutions that balance patient service with our employees’ need to have safe, accessible parking close to their work areas. Thank you to all our employees for their understanding and positive attitude as we work together to improve the parking experience for our patients and their families.”
