About Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long observance under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. It grew into a month-long national celebration under President Ronald Reagan in 1988. What began as a recognition of history has become a tribute to the lasting impact of Hispanic and Latino communities on every facet of American life.

The celebration begins Sept. 15, coinciding with the independence days of several Central American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. This month-long observance recognizes the vibrant cultures, unwavering resilience, and extraordinary contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities that continue to shape our nation’s future.
