Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine celebrate Veterans Day and Military Family Appreciation Month in November

Penn State Health proudly celebrates Veterans Day and Military Family Appreciation Month in November, recognizing the dedication and sacrifices of military members, veterans and their families.
Free coffee on Veterans Day
Employees who are active-duty military or veterans can enjoy free coffee on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the cafes at Hampden Medical Center, Lancaster Medical Center, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute. This event is provided by the Military and Veteran Business Employee Resource Group.
A tribute to veterans
Penn State Health honors those who have served through highlights on the health system’s Flickr page. If you or a colleague were not featured and would like to be, please email jmccrea1@pennstatehealth.psu.edu to be included in future updates.
Showing support
Employees can show their support for their military and veteran colleagues by using the Veterans Day virtual background throughout November. Visit Penn State Health’s Veterans webpage to learn about other ways to support military and veteran employees and the community.
Military and veteran status in GHR
Approximately 2.2% of the health system’s workforce identifies as protected veterans. Staff can now update their employee profiles in GHR to include information about their current or past military service. Employees can update in GHR:
- Within Infor Global HR, click on My Profile.
- Then click on Personal Information.
- Scroll down the page to enter your military status and branch of service.
This information will help the health system determine how best to support military and veteran employees.
Military/Veteran Business Employee Resource Group
Workforce members who are currently or have served in the military or those who support those who have served can join in our Military/Veteran Business Employee Resource Group here.
Connecting employees and patients who served
The Veteran-to-Veteran program at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center launched its pilot phase this summer. The program offers veteran patients and their family members a chance to be visited by a Penn State Health or Penn State College of Medicine employee who also served in the military. The goal is to help build a sense of connection between patients and staff who share military experience, which can help improve communication and care.
