Penn State Health invests in employees

Following a market review that was driven in large part by employee engagement survey feedback earlier this year, Penn State Health has made a $7 million commitment to provide pay adjustments for employees in 50 job titles.

It works out to an average of more than $4,100 a year for each eligible staff member who works full time in one of these roles.

Here are the details:

What: Nearly 1,700 frontline staff across Penn State Health will receive increases of up to $2/hour based on market adjustments to their positions.

Who: Staff includes medical office associates, schedulers, insurance authorization specialists, medical assistants, registrars, bed management associates, patient account associates, registration associates and other frontline staff positions.

Why: Penn State Health made the adjustment to stay market competitive and enhance our ability to retain and recruit these positions. Physicians, clinical leadership and practice managers also called for these rate adjustments to address concerns over the high rate of turnover and the impact it has on clinical operations and patient experience.

When: The pay rate changes take effect for the pay period starting Dec. 22. The new rate will be reflected in paychecks issued on Jan.10, 2020.

Most of the affected staff will receive the full $2/hour increase. There are approximately 280 staff in the eligible roles whose pay rate is already high enough within the range that they will receive a lower rate increase, a lump-sum payment or a combination of the two.

Employees who are receiving a lump sum in place of base affecting pay increases, will receive half of their lump sum on Jan. 10 with their regular pay. The other half will be paid on April 3.

Ongoing: Penn State Health will continue routine market assessments to stay competitive in our ability to recruit and retain staff.
