Penn State Health names Leaming Hampden Medical Center interim vice president for medical affairs
Penn State Health has appointed Dr. James Leaming interim vice president for medical affairs at Hampden Medical Center, effective May 1. He also serves as the hospital’s director of Emergency Medicine.
Leaming is responsible for leading the development and recruitment of the medical staff for Hampden Medical Center, which will open in Cumberland County this fall. He also oversees the acute care hospital’s relationships with private practice physicians to ensure clinical integration and patient and provider quality and satisfaction.
“Dr. Leaming’s appointment comes at a crucial point in the opening process of our newest acute care hospital,” says Don McKenna, regional president for Hampden Medical Center and Holy Spirit Medical Center. “His understanding of what community physicians need from a hospital to meet the unique health care needs of families in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and York counties will prove invaluable to our success.”
Leaming will continue to serve as director of Emergency Medicine for Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center. He joined the hospital in 2016 after serving Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for eight years, including roles as director of Emergency Medicine Research, director of Emergency Medicine Observation and director of Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship.
Board-certified in emergency medicine, Leaming graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Ohio. He then completed both a residency and a research fellowship in emergency medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, N.Y.
“I appreciate the opportunity to be part of the team that will guide Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center as it prepares to open its doors to patients from the West Shore and the broader Harrisburg area,” Leaming said. “Our vision is to collaborate with community providers to ensure access to the high-quality care for which Penn State Health is known.”
Leaming is accredited by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Emergency Medicine and the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
