Penn State Health revises patient visitation guidelines for pediatric outpatients

Penn State Health revised its Tier 2 visitation guidelines to allow two family/support persons in all pediatric care settings, including outpatient clinics.

In addition, a new visitation exception allows children to accompany adults when a lack of available child care would prevent a patient from obtaining care. The exception applies to adult and pediatric outpatient clinics and procedural areas as well as emergency departments.

  • Under the exception, children may accompany the families of patients who have exhausted all child care options to allow the patient to receive treatment, as long as the maximum number of allowable family/support person(s) for the care area is not exceeded.
  • The visitation exception will not be published on the Penn State Health website. It is for internal use on a case by case basis.

Penn State Health considers employees visitors or family/support persons when they are not involved in the care of a patient. Employees must follow the visitation guidelines to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
