Penn State Health salutes security officers during Healthcare Security and Safety Week

Providing security for a campus the size of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine is a large task, but it’s one that the Department of Security does well, around the clock and on a daily basis.

Penn State Health honored its security officers and their impact on patient outcomes during Healthcare Security and Safety Week Oct. 14-20. Several officers received awards, including Officer of the Year, Nursing Support Services Award by the Nursing Department and Letters of Commendation for dedication beyond routine duty.

Key Security Stats

  • The Security Operations Center receives 2,500 calls each month, totaling 30,000 calls each year.
  • Approximately 2,100 of those calls require further investigation – i.e., criminal events, patient assistance and staff assistance.
  • Security staff members answer 25,000 to 30,000 alarm calls throughout the Hershey campus per month.

The International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety created the week to highlight the important role played by those responsible for the security of health care facilities, hospitals and medical centers around the world. The 2018 theme was “Trusted Partners in Healthcare.”
