Penn State Health virtual health team expands by two

Penn State Health welcomed two new members to its virtual health leadership team, which oversees the continually expanding services for patients and consumers seeking the convenience of virtual care.

Dr. Daniel Schlegel, has been named medical director for COMMpanion, an all-in-one, personalized Virtual Primary Care offering which provides unlimited access to primary care through a personal device. COMMpanion is offered to companies and their employees/dependents throughout Pennsylvania. Learn more about the forthcoming COMMpanion offering at www.commpanion.health.

Schlegel, leads a team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and care navigators who help employees build a personalized health plan, proactively manage their care, provide sick and well visits, answer health questions and assistance with navigating referrals and specialist care.

Previously Schlegel oversaw the establishment and development of the Family Medicine Residency at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, is the medical director of telehealth for Family and Community Medicine, publishing research and providing telehealth presentations through Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes).

After graduating from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Schlegel completed residency at Lancaster General Hospital and joined the Penn State College of Medicine faculty in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. He practiced inpatient medicine at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and currently practices outpatient medicine at Penn State Health Medical Group ─ Middletown. Prior to that, he practiced at Penn State Health Medical Group ─ Fishburn Road, where he was named to the Medical Group Dean’s List for Extraordinary Patient Satisfaction.

Kelly Hollenbeak, a registered nurse, has been named supervisor, Virtual Care Nursing at Penn State Health Virtual Health. Kelly leads a team of nursing care managers who provide nursing care to patients in Remote Patient Monitoring, COMMpanion Virtual Primary Care, and Penn State Health Virtual ICU. Virtual ICU provides 24/7 support to Penn State Health facilities.

Trained as a critical care nurse, Hollenbeak has a master of professional studies in homeland security – public health preparedness. Prior to joining Penn State Health Virtual Care, she was a critical care float nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care, Medical Intensive Care, Medical Intermediate Care and Special Pathogens Intensive Care units at Hershey Medical Center.

“Adding these two highly knowledgeable people to our team will allow us to keep developing new services that can help people throughout central Pennsylvania access care more easily,” says Christopher LaCoe, vice president of virtual care for Penn State Health. “As interest in virtual health grows, we are growing in expertise and service.”
