Penn State Health’s $156 million investment supports ‘Healthy Communities, Healthy Futures’

Penn State Health contributed $156,730,522 in community benefits during fiscal year 2022 and worked together with Penn State College of Medicine to serve the growing health care needs of central Pennsylvania residents. Their work is highlighted in our first Community Benefit Report, “Healthy Communities, Healthy Futures,” featuring examples of our successful efforts to improve mental health, health equity and wellness/disease prevention and reduce health inequities.

“Our care doesn’t end within the walls of our hospitals and medical offices,” said Steve Massini, Penn State Health CEO. “We partner with schools, churches, shelters, food pantries and more to try to give every adult and child the best opportunity to live healthy lives.”

The total community benefit Penn State Health provided includes effective programs, compassionate charity care, unreimbursed Medicaid costs, and supplemental medical, dental and pharmaceutical services.

The health system and Penn State College of Medicine collaborate on a Community Health Needs Assessment every three years to guide strategies in serving the health care needs of area residents. The assessment identified three key health issues: mental health, health equity and wellness/disease prevention. By offering free health screenings, creating community gardens and providing behavioral health training to teachers and child therapists, Penn State Health, the College of Medicine and our community partners are actively addressing those issues and improving the health of people throughout the region.

In fiscal year 2023, Penn State Health admitted 51,068 patients to its five adult acute care hospitals and children’s hospital, treated 198,415 patients in its emergency departments and welcomed two million visits to its 225 outpatient locations.

“Our employees can take pride in the fact that Penn State Health goes beyond the traditional role of health care provider,” Massini said. “We are the only locally based academic health system in central Pennsylvania and, together with Penn State College of Medicine, lead groundbreaking clinical trials and train the next generation of health professionals. With the help of our community partners, we’re ensuring that everyone has an equal shot at a healthier life.”
