“Proud to be GIM Week” campaign set for February 21-25
Faculty in the Department of Medicine’s Division of General Internal Medicine and internal medicine residents at Penn State College of Medicine are gearing up to celebrate “Proud to be GIM Week,” a campaign that aims to encourage medical students and residents to explore careers in general internal medicine.
“Proud to be GIM Week” is set for February 21-25. The weeklong schedule of activities is funded by a grant from the Society of General Internal Medicine and organized by Division of General Internal Medicine faculty along with the Internal Medicine Interest Group, a student organization comprised of medical students at the College of Medicine. The initiative also hopes to inspire practicing general internists to celebrate everything that makes the general internal medicine field unique.
The schedule of activities is as follows:
- Welcome to GIM Week!
7:30-8:15 a.m. February 21 (virtual)
Several internists and primary care-track residents will present during a virtual session about why they are proud to be members of the general internal medicine field. The roundtable discussion will be pre-recorded. Click here for the Zoom link. - GIM: To Infinity and Beyond
6:30-8 p.m. February 22 (PBL/FPCC classrooms)
This networking event intends to showcase the various ways in which a generalist can practice, serve and lead. Several faculty members will be on hand who have roles in advocacy, education and industry. Students and residents should check their emails for a “Proud to be GIM Week” communication from the IMIG Board, which includes sign-up details. - Never Fear, Near Peer Mentoring Is Here!
5-6 p.m. February 24 (virtual)
Students and residents should check their email for an IMIG Board communication that includes a survey to fill out so participants can be paired with a like-minded internal medicine resident for mentoring. - Patient Care
12-1 p.m. February 25 (LR-B)
A panel of internists and their patients will speak about their unique provider-physician relationship to help students and residents learn about the impact that internists and their patients have on one another. Lunch vouchers will be distributed at this event. Students and residents should check their email for sign-up information. - #ProudtobeGIM Twitter Conversation
Students and residents are encouraged to follow the Twitter hashtag #ProudtobeGIM to engage with faculty and alumni to learn about their experience in general internal medicine.
“Proud to be GIM Week” organizers also encourage students and residents to sign up for a free American College of Physicians (ACP) membership, which offers benefits including a subscription to the ACP’s peer-reviewed journal, participation in abstract competitions and a Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program for fourth-year medical students.
Organizers note that engagement in “Proud to be GIM Week” events and initiatives will offer the chance to win SGIM trainee memberships, branded “swag” and the opportunity to attend the SGIM’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting.
