Rakszawski named Hershey Medical Center’s December Physician of the Month

Hershey Medical Center awarded its Physician of the Month for December to Dr. Kevin Rakszawski, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology, Penn State Cancer Institute and vice chair of quality and patient safety in the Penn State Cancer Institute.

Rakszawski recognized for Exceptional Moments in Teaching – Penn State Health News

Rakszawski was nominated for both his clinical expertise and dedication to enhancing the overall care experience for patients and team members. He aims to advance oncology care by learning about and sharing ways to reduce mortality rates, improve clinical documentation and refine clinical competence. Colleagues are inspired by Rakszawski’s dedication to working in multidisciplinary teams in efforts like outlining a patient’s plan of care. Recently, he partnered with nurses to decrease infection rates in central lines.

Rakszawski is invested in fostering the growth of new physicians through his involvement in junior faculty development and education for oncology fellows. As a course director at the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology, he assists with the review of continuing medical education to enhance the education of physicians across the nation. In his role as course director for the Boston-based Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare, Rakszawski highlights cases or themes related to the emotional impact of patient care on health care providers.

Rakszawski completed his medical degree at Penn State College of Medicine and both his internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship at Hershey Medical Center.

He began as a student in the Penn State College of Medicine as he studied for his Doctor of Medicine and post-graduate training in internal medicine. His research focuses on clinical trials in lymphoma, multiple myeloma and blood and marrow transplantation. He has received several awards and honors, including the 2022 Penn State College of Medicine Exceptional Moments in Teaching Award (Humanities), 2022 Pennsylvania Medical Society Top Physicians Under 40, 2021 Penn State College of Medicine Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and 2015-2016 Hershey Medical Center Resident Research Award.
