Seger wins Hershey Medical Center July DAISY Award
Hershey Medical Center presented the July DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) to Stella Seger, a staff nurse in peri-anesthesia. The accolade recognizes nurses for their skillful, compassionate care and their daily support of patients and families.
A co-worker nominated Seger for her efforts to bring peace to the mother of a child who’d succumbed to accidental injuries. Seger, who was working an extra shift in the post-anesthesia care unit, sprang into action when she saw an operating room nurse bringing the child to the mother so she could see the child one last time.
Seger took the baby and the nurse into an open procedure room, obtained a rocking chair and phoned the chaplain. Once the baby was cleaned and wrapped, Seger phoned for the mother to be with her child.
Once the mother arrived, Seger helped the mother connect with family via an online connection. She helped her obtain a locket of the child’s hair and helped bring the chaplain in per the mother’s request. She provided a calm, comforting environment for their last embrace, the nominator wrote.
“Stella poured her entire heart into making this encounter as peaceful as possible for all involved,” the nominator wrote. “It was a phenomenal example of how much Stella cares, not only for the patients and their families, but also for her co-workers.”
Afterward, Seger helped the chaplain escort the mother to security, which drove the mother back to the Ronald McDonald house. She phoned Tracy Sinopoli for a care basket for the operating room nurse and assisted Decedent Care with the baby.
