Sgrignuoli earns DAISY Award for outstanding patient care

Maike Sgrignuoli, a staff nurse in Hershey Medical Center’s Neuroscience Critical Care Unit, was selected as the September DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award winner. She was nominated by a patient’s family for the exceptional care she provided.

“Maike is a role model for the nursing profession,” wrote the family member. “She was a joy to have as a nurse. She was always a ray of sunshine when she walked into the room and made the patients’ day brighter.”

Judy Himes, Hershey Medical Center chief nursing officer, presented Sgrignuoli with a DAISY Award certificate, a pin, a hand-carved Shona sculpture entitled “A Healer’s Touch” and a treat to share with her unit.

Maike “told us every time she gave mom medicine ― the name of the medication and what it is for,” the patient wrote. “She told us if there was a change in the dosage of the medication.

“She gave mom a pep talk on the day she was feeling down after being in the hospital for 11 days,” the patient continued. “She listened to mom’s likes and dislikes and remembered them, like how she liked her sheets and blankets and what she liked to drink. She made my mom’s long hospital stay more enjoyable.”

DAISY Award Mission

The Daisy Award was created in memory of Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). The DAISY Foundation was established by Patrick’s family to keep his spirit alive. Its primary mission is to express gratitude to nurses for the work they do for patients and their families every day.
