Shapiro to leave role as vice dean for Faculty and Administrative Affairs
Dr. Daniel Shapiro has announced his plans to leave his role as the vice dean for Faculty and Administrative Affairs at Penn State College of Medicine and as the Garner James Kline Professor of Humanities in Medicine effective Jan. 31, 2023.
A past chair of the Department of Humanities, Shapiro began his role as vice dean in 2015, where he has been responsible for the recruitment and screening of chairs and other leaders. During this time, he has participated in the recruitment of 15 chairs and an institute director, two vice deans and almost as many interim chairs. The innovation he developed using simulation to screen chair candidates was featured on the cover of the Chronicles of Higher Education and in the New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst. He has provided 360 performance evaluations for hundreds of employees, evaluated many departments, launched two new departments, created the dean’s dashboard that brings together data from across missions into one location and created a coaching request for proposals that brought cost-effective, talented coaches into our system to help elevate leaders.
Shapiro has managed a number of sometimes delicate, behavioral and performance issues as well as interpersonal conflicts.
“I can’t thank him enough for his dedication and loyalty to the success of Penn State College of Medicine and its relationship to the University and Penn State Health,” said Dr. Kevin Black, interim dean. “He will be severely missed not just for his role and the work he has done, but for the humor, levity and energy he brought into discussions. In the coming months, I will be working on an interim plan regarding how to handle Dr. Shapiro’s responsibilities, which I will announce at a later date.”
