Spring flood safety reminder

As spring approaches, the likelihood of flooding increases across Pennsylvania. Flooding is the most frequent and costly natural hazard in the Commonwealth, impacting over 94% of municipalities. Anywhere it can rain, it can flood—and even one inch of water can cause approximately $25,000 in damage, according to FEMA.
When floodwaters rise, remember the lifesaving phrase: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Just six inches of moving water can knock an adult off their feet, and 12 inches can sweep away a vehicle. Each year, nearly 100 people lose their lives in floods, many of them motorists attempting to drive through flooded roads.
Flood safety tips
- Avoid flooded roads: Never drive through flood water. Turn around, don’t drown. Do not bypass “road closed” signs, even if the road appears safe.
- Be cautious at night: Flood hazards are much harder to recognize in low‑visibility conditions.
- Get to higher ground: If your vehicle becomes surrounded by rising water and it is safe to do so, exit the vehicle and move to higher ground immediately.
- Stay informed: Monitor weather alerts, updates from local authorities and road conditions at www.511pa.com.
