St. Joseph Medical Center names three June DAISY Award winners

St. Joseph Medical Center presented three DAISY Awards during June. The winners were Morgan Boyer, clinical program coordinator; Deanna Kunder, a nurse with the Family Birthing Center; and Brittany Yocum, a float pool nurse.

The spouse of a patient who suffered a brain clot recognized Boyer for saving her husband’s life.

“She was compassionate and concerned for a patient. She was well educated in the field of strokes, and she helped me to understand better what was going on inside of my husband’s head,” she said. “I tell all my friends and anyone who asks about that day that she was the angel that we so desperately needed.”

A first-time mom recognized Kunder for providing “unwavering, wonderful care” throughout her birth experience.

“She was incredibly knowledgeable, communicative, sweet, kind and personable,” she said. “I had no idea what to expect, but Deanna was so gracious! She answered all my questions and helped me in whatever way I needed. I cannot say enough how much we appreciate and are thankful for Deanna!”

A physician recognized Yocum for saving a patient’s life by suggesting a possible cause for his respiratory difficulties that hadn’t been previously considered. Until this point, the patient had continued to deteriorate and was transferred to the Critical Care Unit for possible intubation despite having tested negative for COVID-19. Once Yocum’s suggestion was confirmed, the doctor successfully treated the patient with medication and discharged him home with his family.
