Ural recognized with Excellence in Enhancing Diversity and Inclusion Award

Dr. Serdar Ural of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is the January 2025 recipient of the Excellence in Enhancing Diversity and Inclusion Award.

Ural, a professor and vice chair for diversity, equity and inclusion in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was honored in January for his commitment to diversity and inclusion in patient care and medical education. He also recently earned the Diversity Champion designation. Ural, who was born in Turkey to a family of the Islamic faith, prioritizes inclusion in patient care, implementing a program to ask patients their preferred pronouns for inclusion in their electronic health records.

He is also committed to mentoring diverse students at all levels of training. He collaborated with colleagues to create a virtual medical student elective designed to introduce minoritized medical students to Penn State Health’s obstetrics and gynecology expertise. This successful course brought new underrepresented students to the program. As director of the maternal fetal medicine fellowship training program, he has recruited a diverse population of fellows and championed fellows of all backgrounds who have graduated to prestigious, impactful positions in research and clinical practice.

Ural chose Dr. Taffy Anderson, an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as his hidden hero.
