Orlando named St. Joseph senior director of development
Mary “Missy” Orlando has been named senior director of development for the St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation. In this role, she is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising and donor relations program that includes an immediate and long-term cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plan for benefactors. She leads the current foundation staff in achieving key goals with the assistance of the foundation board.
Miliner selected for Hershey Medical Center hospital operations post
Mona Miliner has been named vice president of hospital operations at Hershey Medical Center, effective Monday, Feb. 17. Miliner will be responsible for Penn State Cancer Institute, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Radiation Oncology, Hematology and Oncology, Radiology, Psychiatry and Patient Experience. Her 24 years of industry experience includes her most recent position as chief of operations and finance at University of Cincinnati Physicians and executive director of business and administration at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience.
Glod discusses opioid addiction at congressional briefing
Dr. Susan Glod, associate professor of medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, participated in a congressional briefing on Nov. 19 on why the distinction between opioid dependence and opioid addiction matters. “We need to start asking ourselves if there are other victims of the opioid epidemic that we don’t typically think of,” Glod said. “I treat cancer patients who need these medications but can’t obtain them due to stigma or other barriers.”

Full STEM Ahead event draws 100 people
Penn State PRO Wellness welcomed nearly 100 people to the Full STEM Ahead event for families of middle school students in the School District of Lancaster. The Nov. 19 event was connected to a Penn State PRO Wellness research study on the effectiveness of school and community-based information that improves the rate of parent intent to vaccinate their children. Lime Spring creates Giving Tree
Penn State Health Medical Group – Lime Spring created a Giving Tree and, through generous donations from staff and patients, supported three area families via the Community Action Program in Lancaster City.

Radiation Oncology Inaugural Lecture Jan. 14
Dr. Rodney Ellis, chair of the College of Medicine’s Department of Radiation Oncology, will give his inaugural lecture, “Getting Back to the Future of Radiation Oncology,” on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 5 p.m. in Junker Auditorium. A reception will follow in the anteroom. The event will be livestreamed and available for viewing afterward. Continuing Medical Education credit is provided to those who attend the presentation in person.
Institutional Review Board Strategies Lecture Jan. 16
Courtney Karmelita of Penn State’s Office for Research Protections will present “Successful Strategies for Working with the IRB” from 1 to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, in the College of Medicine, Lecture Room A. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) protects the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in research at Hershey Medical Center and the College of Medicine. The event is part of the SMaRT Connects series, which supports human subjects research professionals through timely College of Medicine research process information, professional development and networking. Veterinary Pathology Lecture Jan. 15
Hannah Atkins and Jennifer Booth, both assistant professors in the College of Medicine’s Department of Comparative Medicine, will give a presentation entitled “Health surveillance and veterinary pathology: tools for improving animal research quality.” The lecture is Wednesday, Jan. 15 at noon in the College of Medicine, Lecture Room A. Project ECHO Courses March 11, 18
Penn State Project ECHO is launching two Continuing Medical Education-eligible ECHO courses focused on diagnosis and management of common and complex neurological conditions. “Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia” launches Wednesday, March 11. This course includes seven one-hour sessions every other Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., concluding June 3. Register here. “Polyneuropathy and Musculoskeletal Pain” launches Wednesday, March 18. This course includes eight one-hour sessions every other Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., concluding June 24. Register here.
Martin Luther King Day Ceremony Jan. 20
The Department of Pastoral Care and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are hosting the fourth annual Martin Luther King Day service at the College of Medicine’s Junker Auditorium on Monday, Jan. 20, from noon to 12:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Guest speaker Peter Speaks, the former deputy secretary of general services of Pennsylvania and special advisor to the governor, will offer a message in remembrance of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.
Standardized Badge Change Due Jan. 31
Reminder: Hershey Medical Center and Children’s Hospital are standardizing employee identification badges. Employees with pink background ID badges must replace them with badges that have white backgrounds by Friday, Jan. 31.
Four Diamonds Accepts Support Applications Until Feb. 28
Four Diamonds is accepting applications to support efforts to advance its mission of conquering childhood cancer. Departments that provide services to pediatric oncology patients at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital are invited to submit applications for funding. Use the invitation code: FDClinical21. Capital equipment requests that were not submitted via Hershey Medical Center’s capital/project intake process are not eligible for funding. Deadline is Friday, Feb. 28. Email for more information.
