Pushup Challenge
An estimated 22 veterans are lost to suicide daily. The sobering fact prompted the Association of American Medical Colleges and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences to raise awareness with an annual Medical School Pushup Challenge. Last week, dozens of faculty and students at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey and University Park accepted the challenge, and each completed 22 pushups. Watch a video about the event.
Stillerman Lecture Available Online
Dr. Audrey Stillerman’s lecture, “The Dramatic Impact of Childhood Experiences on Health Across the Lifespan: From Research to Action” is now available on Mediasite. Stillerman’s research shows traumatic childhood experiences are a root cause of chronic illness and early death.

Dalke Wins Local Spotlight Award
Dr. Katie Dalke, a psychiatrist at the Pennsylvania Psychiatrist Institute, assistant professor of psychiatry and director for Culturally Responsive Health Care Education at Penn State College of Medicine, and co-chair of the college’s LGBTQ Affinity Group, received the LGBT Center of Central PA’s Local Spotlight Award on Sept. 21. The award recognizes an individual or organization whose work contributes to building connected, engaged and resilient LGBTQ+ communities in central Pennsylvania.
Rosito Named ALS Practitioner of the Year
Amanda Rosito, a paramedic at Life Lion Critical Care Transport Service, was awarded the Advanced Life Support (ALS) Practitioner of the Year Award by the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council. She accepted the award Sept. 5 at the Pennsylvania State Emergency Medical Services Conference in Manheim.
Stuckey Recognized for Exceptional Moments in Teaching
Heather Stuckey, associate professor of medicine, humanities and public health sciences at Penn State College of Medicine, is featured for September in the “Exceptional Moments in Teaching” program. Read the full story.
Graduate Students Honor Faculty Members
College of Medicine graduate students recognized faculty members in August for their outstanding teaching skills. Students selected the faculty members because they found them engaging and helpful. Winners are: Lisa Shantz, Best Overall Professor; Ralph Keil, Most Motivating Professor and Kent Vrana, Best Presenter.

St. Joseph’s Downtown Cafeteria Grand Opening
Penn State Health St. Joseph’s Downtown Cafeteria will serve a special menu this Friday, Sept. 27, to mark its grand opening. Hours are 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. View the menu.
Guts & Glory Digestive & Wellness Expo
St. Joseph will host the 2019 Guts & Glory Digestive & Wellness Expo on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at first Energy Stadium in Reading. The event features lectures on nutrition, fitness and healthy living, live active demonstrations and stress relief tips. Learn more at www.MyGutInstinct.org.
Fall Celebration
Penn State Health Medical Group ― Cocoa will host a Fall Celebration this Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Patients and other community members are invited to enjoy some free family fun, including a DJ, face painting, burgers, hot dogs and other refreshments. The event also features a celebration of Dr. Dean Leis, who is retiring after 43 years of service, and an opportunity to meet two new members of the Cocoa practice family.
Lime Spring Walk-In Clinic
The Lime Spring Outpatient Center Walk-in Clinic opens Monday, Sept. 30. It will be open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Patients can walk in with no appointment for treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, plus sports and school physicals, X-rays and lab services.
Penn State Laureate Presentation
Penn State Laureate Professor William Doan will deliver his laureate presentation to the Penn State Berks campus on Monday, Sept. 30, at 12:15 p.m. in Room 121 of the Gaige Building on Penn State Berks campus. A professor of theatre, Doan is artist-in-residence at Penn State College of Nursing. His work explores what it’s like to live with anxiety and depression, using a combination of personal experience and research into the complex world of mental health. Hope for Healing Gift Basket Auction
Penn State Health Children’s Hospital will host the Sixth Annual Hope for Healing Gift Basket Auction Wednesday, Oct. 2 to Friday, Oct. 4 at the Children’s Hospital between Starbucks and the Tree House Café. Bidding closes at 2 p.m. Oct. 4. All proceeds benefit patients with financial needs related to their cancer care.
Biostatistics Seminar
Vern Chinchilli, distinguished professor and chair of the College of Medicine’s Department of Public Health Sciences, will present “Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis” at the next Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design Research Methods Seminar Series. This seminar will be 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Penn State College of Medicine, H4504 (Clinical Research Center). Register here by 5 p.m. on Oct. 7.
5K for Trey
The first 5K for Trey will be Saturday, Oct. 12, from 8 a.m. to noon at 30 Hope Drive, Hershey. The 5K run/walk is in memory of Trey Schultz, who died from an infectious disease at 24 years old. Proceeds will support Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine’s research of effective treatments for infectious diseases. Click here for more information and to register.
Community Relations Grants Deadline Oct. 15
The deadline to apply for 2020 Community Relations grants is Oct. 15. The Community Relations Department offers grants to community programs that address priorities identified in the Community Health Needs Assessment. Applications are accepted annually from July to October and are awarded from January to December for up to $5,000 each. Priority will be given to sustainable start-up projects that will have a positive health impact on our community. Click here for details and to apply.
