West End Parking Deck to provide better parking experience

Construction of a new five-story parking deck next to the University Conference Center on the Hershey campus is due to get underway this Monday, Jan. 21. The new deck will provide 1,247 additional parking spots and much-needed support for continued growth, but it will temporarily impact Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine employees and students in several ways.

One hundred spots in Lot A-1 will be reserved for individuals who attend events at the University Conference Center. The spots will be sectioned off and monitored by a parking attendant on the day of events. When the University Conference Center does not have an event, the spots will be open to individuals who are assigned to Lot A-1.

The change will significantly impact those who are assigned to Lot A-1 during events, including the twice-a-month New Employee Orientations at the University Conference Center. The effected staff members are encouraged to allot an additional half hour for their commute before clocking in. If Lot A-1 is full, they should park in Lot L near the Academic Support Building and take the campus shuttle. Employees who need directions to Lot L can text “PARK” to 717-621-3601. Download the shuttle tracker app from the Infonet to see the real-time location of the shuttle bus and when it will arrive at your bus stop. Staff members should not park at the Centerview Parking Garage unless they are assigned to that parking garage.

“This situation, although frustrating and inconvenient, is temporary until the new parking deck is completed,” said Scott Sutherland, director of security. “Our new co-workers aren’t as familiar with the campus as we are and would appreciate being able to park close to the University Conference Center on their first day here at Penn State Health. This demonstrates our RITE value of teamwork in action ― working together to ensure the best experience for co-workers and patients.”

Some employees will have their parking assignment permanently changed from Lot A-1 to Lot L to provide adequate parking for patients and visitors. Those effected will be notified by email.

The barriers at the newly created entrance to the University Fitness Center parking lot will be removed on Monday. The areas of the lot designated for Fitness Center visitors will be identified by signs. Violators who park in either the Centerview Parking Garage or the University Fitness Center will be fined.

The start date of the parking deck construction was delayed for several weeks because of permitting issues. It is scheduled to be completed by this fall.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through these challenges to provide a better parking experience for everyone who visits or works on the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus,” said Sutherland.
