The pressures of an education in health care are very high. So when a student comes to me, they're often feeling already marginalized because they can't be successful in the way they are hoping. And they need some type of support in order for them to have the best chance for success.
The worst thing about it is that my eyesight is terrible. If you've ever looked through a foggy window or like the bottom of a milk glass or something like that and just everything looks a lot blurrier, that's pretty much what it is for me all the time. As soon as I got here and started doing lab work, I knew it would be challenging. It's difficult for me. I face a lot of stress dealing with everyday-- just everyday things. I reached out to Paula.
I say this very often, but I really believe that the student is the expert in their diagnosis. So they often come to me and say here's where I need the help, and here's what I think would be helpful.
What she got me is a head-mounted magnifying glass. You may have seen jewelers or people working on electronics with things like this. I had never had something like that. It's fantastic. I use it every day now.
It was a very simple thing to put in place but made a very big difference for him.
Paula and the school have helped me increase my chances of success here. There's a significant chance that I may have burned out without that help. I don't mind admitting because it's real.
