Penn State Health announced today the appointment of Dr. Tony G. Farah to the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Board of Directors. Farah is executive vice president and chief medical and clinical transformation officer for Highmark Health.
The appointment of Farah is part of the innovative strategic partnership announced by Penn State Health and Highmark Health in December 2017. The organizations have committed a collective investment of more than $1 billion toward the development of a high-value, community based healthcare network designed to keep care local and enhance collaboration with community physicians.
Three members of Highmark Health will also join the Penn State Health Board of Directors. An announcement about the new Penn State Health Board of Directors appointments will follow that board’s meeting on Feb. 21.
A nationally recognized and highly respected physician-leader, Farah is Highmark Health’s senior-most medical officer and is responsible for continued improvement of clinical care to achieve the best value for overall patient care. Farah played a key role in the formation of Allegheny Health Network (AHN), a healthcare system that serves the greater western Pennsylvania region as the provider arm of Highmark Health. He previously held roles within AHN, including chief medical officer; president of Allegheny Clinic, ANH’s employed physician organization; chief medical officer of Allegheny General Hospital; and medical director for Allegheny General Hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories.
For 20 years, Farah has been named one of the nation’s “Best Doctors in America” in the field of cardiology by Pittsburgh magazine. He has also earned the Healthcare Hero Award in the healthcare executive category by the Pittsburgh Business Times. He has been the principal investigator or co-investigator of more than 100 clinical trials, and his work has been published in many scientific journals.
Farah earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and his MD from the American University in Beruit. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital.
