Penn State Health announces key West Shore leadership appointments
Penn State Health announced two key leadership appointments that will further its two-hospital strategy to serve the health care needs of the West Shore and surrounding communities. Don McKenna is regional president of Hampden Medical Center and Holy Spirit Medical Center, and Kyle Snyder is senior vice president and chief operating officer of Holy Spirit Medical Center, reporting directly to McKenna.
McKenna, who joined Penn State Health in April as president of Hampden Medical Center, has been instrumental in hiring its leadership team and developing a distinctive hospital program to meet the needs of the communities on the West Shore. In his new role, he provides executive level leadership for both hospitals, driving the region’s operations and growth.
“In the short time since Don joined us, his contributions have been instrumental in preparing Penn State Health to meet the unique needs of the communities on the West Shore,” said CEO Steve Massini. “Under his leadership, we will deliver on our commitment to expand access for the region’s residents to high-quality, comprehensive primary and specialty care services close to home.”
McKenna previously was the president and chief executive officer of Jupiter Health in Florida, where he created a comprehensive stroke center with neuro-surgical and interventional services and developed an open-heart surgery program that included dedicated operative suites and a nursing unit. Prior to leading Jupiter Health, he served as the president and chief executive officer of St. Mary’s Health Care System in Athens, Ga., where he acquired two additional hospitals to expand the health system’s presence throughout northeast Georgia.
McKenna received his master’s in public administration and a bachelor of science in business administration/marketing from Long Island University.
Snyder joined the health system with the Nov. 1 transfer of ownership of Holy Spirit Health System, where he served as chief administrative officer for Holy Spirit Hospital. As senior vice president and chief operating officer of Holy Spirit Medical Center, he is responsible for its daily operations, managing and developing staff, and ensuring high quality care and strong fiscal operations.
“Kyle did an excellent job leading Holy Spirit Hospital during his tenure, and his partnership and strong leadership were key to its successful transition to Penn State Health,” Massini said. “We look to him to help us honor Holy Spirit’s history and continue its legacy of providing quality, compassionate care to the community as part of our health system.”
As chief administrative officer for Holy Spirit Hospital, Snyder worked alongside the leadership team to develop and execute numerous business plans for expansion of services, including its Advanced Endoscopic Ultrasound, Level II Trauma Center, pediatric inpatient unit and Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Center. Prior to joining Holy Spirit, he served as the associate vice president for surgery and anesthesia at Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pa., administrative director for the emergency medicine service line at WellSpan Health, York, Pa., and administrator for the division of nursing at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio.
Snyder earned a bachelor’s degree in health policy and management from Providence College, Providence, R.I., and a master’s degree in health administration from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. He completed an administrative fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
