College of Medicine researcher receives grant to further pediatric oncology research

Valerie Brown, MD, PhD, professor of pediatrics at Penn State College of Medicine, was recently awarded a $50,000 Infrastructure Grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to support clinical trials.

Dr. Brown, who also directs the experimental therapeutics program in the division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, will use the grant to continue her work on finding innovative treatments for pediatric cancers. Brown’s expertise and clinical trials have included developing experimental cancer treatment options unavailable in the region. Dr. Brown and colleagues have just launched a new national clinical study to test a new drug combination to treat relapsed and refractory neuroblastoma.

“I would like to thank the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for their shared commitment to improving the outcomes of pediatric cancer patients,” said Dr. Brown. “I am grateful for their support. Our work is not done until we can tell every patient they are cured.”
