Penn State Health hospitals earn top marks for patient safety in latest Leapfrog ratings

Four Penn State Health hospitals earned an “A” safety grade for spring 2026 from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety.
Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hampden Medical Center, Lancaster Medical Center and St. Joseph Medical Center each earned the highest distinction with an “A” grade. Holy Spirit Medical Center received a “B.”
“We are proud of the continued dedication our teams show every day to advancing patient safety and delivering the highest quality care,” said Dr. Michael Kupferman, chief executive officer of Penn State Health. “Our Leapfrog ratings reflect not only where we are today, but the significant progress we’ve made over time. They speak to a sustained, systemwide commitment to building and strengthening a culture of safety — one that continues to evolve and remains the foundation of everything we do.”
Penn State Health maintains a robust patient safety framework that reflects consistent adherence to evidence‑based protocols that are proven to prevent harm during a hospital stay. Care teams across Penn State Health follow best practices designed to reduce risks after admission, with focused efforts on preventing hospital‑acquired conditions, reducing surgical complications, preventing patient falls and related injuries and identifying early warning signs to help avoid serious complications.
Leapfrog assigns grades of A, B, C, D or F to general hospitals across the United States using evidence-based measures of patient safety focused exclusively on errors, accidents, injuries and infections. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
