From Code to Clinic: Building AI-Powered Standardized Patients for Medical Education

Woodward Center Lecture with Dr. Myles Nickolich and Dr. James Grogan, 2025 Junior Faculty Teaching Award Recipients.

Learning objectives:

  1. Create an AI-based virtual standardized patient to provide a natural-language interface for trainees to exercise clinical reasoning skills.
  2. Apply programing skills and implement novel tools in an AI assessment model to enhance the learner experience and troubleshoot difficulties and common errors.
  3. Critically analyze performance of an AI assessment model and perform quality assurance exercises to ensure standardization and model fidelity.
