College of Medicine to present 2017 Innovation Awards on Nov. 28
The seventh annual Penn State College of Medicine Innovation Awards ceremony will be 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, at University Conference Center. The event is sponsored by Penn State Center for Medical Innovation.
The event recognizes individuals who have had innovative ideas move forward through the execution of a license agreement, received a patent or formed a start-up company based on Penn State technology. The culmination of the event includes the presentation of the Innovator of the Year Award, Investigator to Watch Award and Student Award for Excellence in Innovation.
The evening begins with networking and hors d’oeuvres, accompanied by live jazz music by Steve Rudolph and Company.
The evening’s keynote speaker is Lori Gavrin, PhD, who has more than 15 years of experience as an organic chemist working in the field of drug discovery and development. As a member of GlaxoSmithKline’s highly selective R&D Esprit Leadership Development Program, she is working in the maternal and neonatal health unit in partnership with Save the Children to reduce the tragically high newborn mortality rate in the developing world by increasing access of lifesaving medicines to mothers and newborns.
Before that, Gavrin led research and development efforts in cystic fibrosis, diabetes, arthritis and women’s health. She has more than a dozen publications and is a named inventor on 11 patents.
