Intro to Research Development – Part 2

Research Development, a business unit within the Office of the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, is dedicated to growing the College of Medicine’s research portfolio by providing a range of tools and resources to help investigators expand their network, identify funding and secure extramural grant support.

Research Development’s activities fall into four broad categories — grant-seeking skills, proposal competitiveness, researcher engagement and funding opportunities. In this two part series, researchers will learn how Research Development can support them.

Researcher ENGAGEMENT

  • New Faculty Orientation – Research Development works collaboratively with the Office of Research Affairs and Corporate and Foundation Relations to offer new faculty orientation sessions as a complement to a department’s onboarding program. These 1-on-1 meetings provide an overview of critical information and resources to support a faculty member’s research. Sessions may be requested prior to a faculty member’s start date – or anytime thereafter.
  • Researcher Consultations – Research Development offers consults to researchers at all career stages seeking guidance on research strategy, funding strategy, mentorship and research collaboration.
  • Discover Seminar Series –Research Development hosts a Discover Seminar once each quarter to highlight research resources and interdisciplinary research opportunities at Penn State and beyond. These seminars are recorded and uploaded to Research Development’s Media Channel.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

  • Internal Awards – Research Development administers the College of Medicine’s Internal Awards Program and is available to advise other business units and departments seeking to implement an internal funding competition.
  • Weekly Funding Email – Research Development distributes a weekly email that compiles open funding opportunities at Penn State, as well as active funding opportunities offered by state, federal and non-governmental funders. This weekly email is distributed to faculty and research support staff at the College of Medicine. Contact Research Development to be added to the weekly email list.
  • Team-Building – Research Development facilitates collaborations between researchers to respond to strategically significant funding opportunities.
