Department of Medicine, palliative care section welcome first on-site Grand Rounds speaker in over 2 years

The palliative care section within the Division of General Internal Medicine will soon host the first on-site Department of Medicine Grand Rounds speaker since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020.

Dr. Jason Webb, associate professor of medicine and psychiatry and head of the palliative care section within the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Oregon Health & Science University, will present the Noori Family Endowed Lectureship in Palliative Care from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on June 21 as part of the department’s Grand Rounds. Webb’s presentation will focus on the impact of the integration of specialty palliative care for patients with hematologic malignancies on psychological outcomes.

Dr. Jason Webb is associate professor of medicine and psychiatry and head of the palliative care section within the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Oregon Health & Science University.

A small group will attend the presentation in Lecture Room B at Penn State College of Medicine, and all other interested attendees can tune in virtually over Zoom.

“The section of palliative care is thrilled to welcome Dr. Webb for the Noori Family Endowed Lectureship,” said Dr. Kristina Newport, associate professor of medicine and head of the palliative care section. “Dr. Webb is trained in internal medicine, psychiatry and palliative care, and has expertise working as an embedded clinician with hematology/oncology during his time at Duke University. His publications have been practice-changing, reflecting the integration of mental health with palliative care for people with cancer.”

The lecture was endowed by the family of Dr. Soroush S. Noori, professor of psychiatry at Penn State College of Medicine and founder of the psychosomatic medicine (liaison psychiatry) service at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Noori died in 2016.

Webb’s background and experience, Newport said, align perfectly with the clinical priorities that Noori embodied during his long career as a psychiatrist at the medical center.

“We value the opportunity for Dr. Webb to join us here on campus, providing us the important opportunity to collaborate with him on our hematology/oncology initiatives, educational work and community integration,” Newport said.
