New associate dean for faculty and professional development named

Editor’s note: This is an archived story from 2016. Dr. Barbara Ostrov held the role of associate dean for faculty and professional development from the time of this story until she left Penn State College of Medicine in fall 2018.

Dr. Barbara E. Ostrov was named associate dean for faculty and professional development at Penn State College of Medicine in September 2016.

Ostrov joined the organization in 1991, and her accomplishments include founding the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology and serving as division chief for pediatric and adult rheumatology. She served as interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics in 2006, and as vice chair of the department from 2007 until being named to the interim chair position again in 2014.

Dr. Ostrov earned her MD from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo School of Medicine and completed her residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Buffalo Affiliated Hospitals Program, followed by rheumatology training at the University of Pennsylvania.

She is consistently named a “Best Doctor in America” and has been recognized with the College of Medicine’s Distinguished Educator Award. Ostrov is known for leadership in community service throughout the region, including serving on the boards for the Ronald McDonald House, Children’s Miracle Network and Arthritis Foundation.

Nationally, Dr. Ostrov has served in multiple capacities, including the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Her scholarly work has been published in more than a hundred peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and poster presentations. She has worked on trainee and faculty development throughout her career.

While in this new role, Dr. Ostrov will continue her clinical work as a pediatric rheumatologist. She will also serve as a leader in quality and safety in the Department of Pediatrics.
