Penn State Health May 25 town hall highlights progress on organizational goals, continued growth and more

Penn State Health leaders discussed the health system’s organizational goals and continued growth, among other topics, during the May 25 town hall. Steve Massini, Penn State Health chief executive officer, opened the gathering by reflecting on the tragic events in Buffalo, N.Y., and Uvalde, Texas, asking employees who may be struggling in the wake of these and other events to use the mental health resources available to them if they or someone they know needs help.

Massini said that participation in the March employee engagement survey was very high. Results are now being shared with leaders and managers, who will review them with staff in June and July. Then, each entity or department will establish corresponding action plans.

Penn State Health is on track to achieve its fiscal year 2022 goals for quality and safety as well as its goal to provide a culturally diverse and inclusive environment for employees, Massini said. Two goals that are falling short of their marks are patient experience and financial performance. The health system is still operating with positive margins but is below its 2% target.

Massini also gave updates on Lancaster Pediatric Center and Lancaster Medical Center, which are on track to open on June 24 and this fall, respectively. Senior leaders have been hired for Lancaster Medical Center, and staff recruitment is underway.

David Swift, senior vice president and chief human resources officer, reviewed the timeline for performance reviews and goals, and reminded employees that everyone will be evaluated on the RITE values. Lynette Chappell Williams, vice president and chief diversity officer, highlighted upcoming events for Inclusion Week June 13-17, which will conclude with a Juneteenth employee celebration on Friday, June 17.

During the latter half of the town hall, leaders answered questions sent by staff before or during the town hall. Watch The RITE Stuff and Manager Update for the FAQs.
