ALS Research Breakthrough

Penn State College of Medicine researchers created a computer generated-simulation that allows them to see how a toxin produced by algal blooms in saltwater might cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).The researchers investigated an environmental toxin that has been linked to significantly increased occurrence of sporadic ALS in populations that frequently consume food that contains high levels of the toxin. Elizabeth Proctor, assistant professor of neurosurgery, said the study may be a model for investigating non-genetic cases of ALS, which account for 90% of all diagnoses. Read the full story.

New Contact Number, Email for Information Services

Information Services is centralizing and improving its Service Desk functions to better serve Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine. Changes for contacting Information Services and Clinical Engineering include:

  • One unified contact phone number: 833-577-HELP (4357). Note: Dial the entire 10-digit number, not just the extension.
  • One unified email address: help@pennstatehealth.psu.edu.

The new phone number and email address are available now and will become the only phone and email methods to contact the Service Desk and Clinical Engineering beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1. Reminder labels, table tent cards and information cards are available. If you would like a supply for your department, email your mail code and/or mailing address and the quantity you need to help@pennstatehealth.psu.edu.

TigerConnect

Penn State Health employees have a new, secure messaging tool to help them optimize clinical care. TigerConnect is a HIPAA-compliant, encrypted messaging platform available through a mobile device or desktop computer. Guides on how to use the application are available on the IS TigerConnect page.

UPCOMING EVENTS

‘The Basics of Randomization and Sample Size Estimation’

Allen Kunselman, senior instructor of public health sciences, will present “The Basics of Randomization and Sample Size Estimation” at the next Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) Research Methods Seminar Series. This seminar is from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Penn State College of Medicine, H4504 (Clinical Research Center). It will also be streamed to 116 Henderson, University Park, and stream online. Register by 5 p.m. on Sept. 23. 

Free Naloxone Available

Free doses of the overdose-reversal medication naloxone will be available on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at more than 95 locations throughout Pennsylvania. It’s part of a statewide initiative through the Pennsylvania Department of Health aimed at reducing the number of opioid overdose deaths and getting residents into treatment. The medication will be available as a nasal spray.

‘Reflections from Experienced Mentors’

A panel of female mentors will share their experiences at the Penn State Commission for Women “Reflections from Experienced Mentors” discussion. The event is Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Hershey Medical Center, Junker Auditorium. RSVP by Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Employee Mammogram Nights

Penn State Health female employees age 40 and older are invited to schedule their annual screening mammogram during Employee Mammogram Nights at Penn State Breast Center Mondays, Oct. 14 and Oct. 28, from 4:40 to 8 p.m. The Breast Center is located at 30 Hope Drive, Entrance A, Suite 1800, Hershey. Register at 1-800-243-1455.
